Private Piano Lessons - Learn the Pros and Cons

One of the ways of learning to play the piano is by taking private music lesson . Like everything else in life, private music lessons also have their set of pros and cons. In this article I will highlight the different pros and cons of taking private piano lessons.

Pros of getting private piano lessons :If you are learning the piano by a private piano teacher, consider yourself lucky because a private piano teacher will ensure that you know everything there is to know about a piano, from its history to its future. While in the presence of a good piano teacher all your errors will, first be pointed out and then corrected, at such a level that you start playing the instrument flawlessly. A private teacher will keep you motivated to keep taking your lessons. Moreover, in the presence of the teacher you can ask any question that you have in your mind and the question will be answered and this will heighten your interest in your learning. If you learn the piano from a music school you surely can not select your teacher, and maybe you get stuck with a bad teacher. The advantage of private tutoring is that you know and trust whoever you are hiring.

When you hire the music teacher for the lesson you can set the class schedule as you please. Private tuitions are most suited for those children who do not interact well socially, children who are shy learn better with a tutor than at school in front of many children. The biggest advantage of private piano lessons is that they are very flexible in their approach not like music schools which have set rules about their music teaching. In private lessons the student can learn whatever he pleases and however he pleases, because after all he is paying for all the lessons. The teacher adapts to the student's music taste in private tuitions rather than a student adapting to the teacher's music inclination which is what happens in a music school. The student is free to do more independent learning in private music lessons.
Cons of having private piano lessons :One of the reasons that people dislike private piano lessons is the fact that sometimes they become boring and monotonous for the student, by doing the same exercises and drills again and again.
Also private piano lessons can be very expensive, and in today's crumbling economy it is not possible for everyone to afford to have private lessons. It is not a rule that all piano have to be "good", sometimes even though you are paying a large sum of money for the tuition yet you might not be satisfied with the efforts of the teacher, maybe he/she isn't giving you much attention or even enough time to learn something before skipping on to another thing. Moreover, some people consider it very unpractical to go to the teacher's house for the lesson. Sometimes they can't find the time and this also costs them the extra expense of gas. Sometimes private tuitions can be too much detailed for the student. If a student is just trying to learn the piano to entertain himself or his friends, all the details given in a private piano lesson can become too much for him.

For getting the best piano teacher for you or for your kid, ask around for any good music teachers that anybody might know. Check around for references, so that you are able to hire the perfect teacher who suits all your music needs.

Awkward lessons!!! Help?
I have private piano lessons every week. They are 1-to-1 lessons and my teacher tries to make the atmosphere in the class informal which I hate. She cracks jokes and tells funny stories and tries to make conversation with me (not too personal but maybe about school or family). I really don't want to have an informal atmosphere. I want out lessons to be more formal. What should I do? It is just quite awkward and I don't like it. She isn't trying to do anything weird, she just tries to make a friendly aproach to teaching but I hate it

Do extracurricular activities have to be school-involved?
I'm enrolled in all honors classes, and am taking every AP class offered to me. This year I will be starting my sophomore year in high school, and I figure it's time for me to start fattening up my resume with extracurricular activities. I've been taking private piano lessons for 11 years and I just wanted to know if that qualifies as an extracurricular activity? Or does it have to be something school-sponsored? Like marching band, a school sports team, or some other class my school offers? I'd really appreciate some help!

I plan to double major in History and world politics. I'm not worried about being rejected from every college to which I apply. Rather, my true question is what are my chances of getting into my three target schools: Hamilton College, Amherst College, and Brown University. If you think those schools are reaches I am open to suggestions of other schools that better match my qualifications. If anyone responds with a detailed response I will choose a best answer.
