Success in Keyboard or Piano Lessons

[play piano] [play piano]

A good, qualified keyboard / piano teacher should enjoy teaching students of all ages and abilities, both privately and within schools. Keeping an open mind is vital, teachers can actually learn a lot from their students as well as their students learning a lot from them. Each lesson should be an experience in which both student and tutor work together as a team, with the right combination of enjoyment, passion and hard work, you will achieve the right results.

All areas should be covered from basics, theory, to improvisation and performance and anything in between! Every student should have their own ambition and goal.

You should be able to tailor your lessons to each students' needs, whether it's following a strict syllabus i.e. in preparation for a graded exam, or less formally. It should depend on what the student wishes to achieve from their instrument lessons as everyone is different; some are very serious about their lessons whereas others just want to have a bit of fun, so it's important to be patient and flexible.

Having a great understanding of students' needs and building up trusting relationships to enable a fun and productive lesson together is the key to success.

Some tips for successful keyboard/ piano lessons

  1. Determination for success.
  2. Wherever possible, use material that interests and inspires the student as well as using role models to help them achieve their goals.
  3. The student should never be patronized and all criticism should be constructive.
  4. The teacher should explain things clearly and as many times as necessary.
  5. Have patience. The teacher should not rush the student, everyone learns at different speeds. Likewise, the student cannot expect to be a great musician overnight and without perseverance and practice.
  6. The student should be challenged and stretched but not taken out of their depth.
  7. Success should be recognized and praised.
  8. Regularly discuss difficulties the student may be having.
  9. Both student and teacher should have an open mind for a variety genres of music, perhaps developing this further.
  10. There should be a good connection between teacher and student, enjoying your time together and have fun!
